It’s been a bit of a rough week.
I think you reach a certain point in life and stress just happens. Home ownership, career, children, aging family members. Some of the stress is good (babies, buying a house) and some of it is bad (illness, financial trouble) but it still takes your toll on you. The last few years have been a bit rough on us, nothing really earth-shattering, but still overwhelming. I like to think that it will calm downa bit but I talk to people and realize that what I’m going through isn’t particularly unusual. Which is a bit sad, in itself. The point is at some point you just have to make the best of things.
Sometimes you just have to pamper yourself.
With a young child, it’s not always easy to find time for myself, but every weekend I give myself 30 minutes to take a nice long shower. I do a sugar scrub and a facial scrub and sometimes a special hair mask or treatment of some sort. I like to make the scrubs myself so they are natural and nourishing and have just what I want in them.
This is my facial scrub recipe. I got some apricot kernel meal from Mountain Rose Herbs and I couldn’t really find any recipes online, so I made up my own. It has honey in it, which is a great humectant and also has some exfoliating and brightening properties, and a few other ingredients for texture and moisture. I happen to have fairly dry skin. If you have oily skin you might try a less moisturizing oil, or leave the oil out altogether and add some toner like witch hazel. The oil does add a lot to the thick creamy texture, so you might find that changing the oil makes it a bit more watery. If you try it, let me know!
1 part aloe
1 part coconut oil
2 parts honey
1 part apricot kernel meal
Essential oils (optional)
Directions: Soften coconut oil and honey by microwaving for a few seconds or warming in water bath. Whisk in aloe until slightly foamy, like a beaten egg. Mix in apricot kernel. Add essential oils for scent, if desired.
