Sewing the Ava Dress: Part One

So we went to Mickey’s Halloween party at Disneyland, and of course I wanted to wear a costume.  But they have specific rules about when and where adults can wear costumes, and I didn’t really want to get in trouble if I went a few hours early or wanted to go across to California Adventure, so I was worried about how to manage that.  I decided the best route might be to make a dress that wouldn’t look completely out of place as day-to-day wear, but still gave a nod to a disney character.   This is referred to as “disneybounding”, a practice which started with the Disney Bound Tumblr blog of Leslie Kay.  If you’ve never seen it in action, you really should check out the Tumblr!

Bracelet stacks

Have you heard of this “arm party” thing?  Coined by Leandra Miller of  Man Repeller, this super-fun term for a ton of bracelets is all over twitter and Instagram.  Probably everyone heard of it before me.  I came late to the “arm party” myself,  largely because my career required A LOT of hand washing.  I don’t even wear a watch, because I hate the feeling of the water trapped under it every time I wash my hands.  Plus, it makes me itch.  But now that I’m not working, I can wear all the bracelets I want!  Yay!

T-shirt Necklace

I find it amazing how easily I get used to certain things, and then rely on them.  I’ve been having a rough time getting anything done this summer because Miss E is on summer vacation for the first time.  It’s not like in the past she’s been away or at camp or anything.  This is just the first time she’s had summer vacation because it’s the first time she’s been in school.

Convertible Necklace

I’m sort of obsessed with convertible garments lately.  What’s not to like?  They don’t take up much space in your closet but they can be like a whole wardrobe of options.  Great for travel.  And, environmentally friendly!   It’s like the holy grail of fashion.

Folklore Skirt

The benefit of working less is that I have a little more time to sew.  Unfortunately my metaphorical sewing eyes are bigger than my stomach, as it were.  I keep finding more and more projects that I want to do, but I don’t have as much time as I think I do.  I have collected a nice bit of fabric, recently.  I can’t seem to escape a fabric store without at least a small remnant.  I keep telling myself I’ll just make my daughter a ton of gathered elastic-waistband skirts with all the cotton prints.

Labor Day Roundup

Wow!  Labor Day weekend has come and gone.  I had a crazy busy but also super productive weekend.  But everyone is worn out, including Little Miss who went to bed as soon as we got home today at 6pm without even complaining.  The highlight of the weekend was definitely seeing John Williams at the Hollywood bowl, even though it meant staying out really late (yeah, I’m old, what of it?) and sitting in a crowd of around 18,000 of my now closest friends in the sweltering heat.   But John Williams is a genius and if I can inspire, like, 1/10000 of the people he has inspired I will be a total success in life.  Plus Julie Andrews was there and she is the absolute epitome of old hollywood grace and style.
